‘Places, Loved One’ – Larkin and Beverley

Beverley Civic Society Annual Margaret Powell Memorial Lecture , St Mary’s Church Beverley.

PLS trustee Dr Philip Pullen will be giving a talk about Philip Larkin’s relationship with the town of Beverley and its environs.

Larkin was a frequent visitor to Beverley during the 30 years in which he was
Librarian at the University of Hull. The town figures strongly in his letters to a number
of correspondents, which bring these visits to life. It is also a place that held particular significance in terms of his love life. The talk will centre on how Beverley, and the surrounding countryside, formed part of a poet’s landscape. It will also touch on Larkin’s interest in church visiting or ‘church going’ as his famous poem would have it. And there’s nowhere better for pulling all this together than in the beautiful church of St Mary’s which Larkin visited on several occasions, and which he greatly admired.

Admission is free for members of Beverley Civic Society or £5 for non-members, payable on entry.
